As we get ready to start a new year, I want to focus on tracking my play better, to help in case the tax man cometh.
Are there any apps or software out there that could help me with this task?

It depends on exactly what you mean by "tracking."
Do you want a detailed record of where and when you played, and the result (e.g. "January 7, Bellagio, lost $750")?
Is it simpler, or more complex, than that?

There's a few dedicated apps for this stuff in the app stores, download a few and see what works best. I have yet to find one that has everything or something that allows enough customization for what I want.
If it's just for gaming locations, times,dates ,games, wins and losses there's a few adequate ones like Casino Tracker, Easy Bankroll .
You can customize something like Evo wallet.

You could also find a friend that's a developer to make a very simple web application for you. Pending the level of seriousness/need with your play. I personally developed my teams record keeping and statistics application. Wasn't all that hard. Probably put in about 8 hours of work.

Sorry all, been traveling and haven't been on much. It kind of really is this simple. I've developed an excel spreadsheet which would be easy enough to maintain, just seems like an app would be better.
Essentially what I set up was this.
profit/loss = ending wallet balance -ATM withdrawals + ATM deposits - markers taken + markers paid off - non-gambling expenses - beginning wallet balance.
I might have a +/- sign off in that formula, but you get the idea. I know it's right in my spreadsheet.

I believe an app or spreadsheet is not acceptable for an audit. They want hand written records because a spread sheet is too easy to fake. Hand written records can be analyzed to see if it was written at 1 time or something. Not sure if that is all true but I have heard it from multiple sources.

I can't believe they would accept a hand written log and not a programmed and printed log. They can't honestly expect people to NOT use technology to help keep their logs/information in order. "This is 2016, you certainly may not use technology for your logs! They must be hand written!!" I guess I could be wrong because I don't know, but I just can't see that being the case.

In Nevada, they don't accept hand written logs on paper-- too easy to cheat the system. They require you to chisel your logs into stone. Seriously, look it up. Something in my gut's telling me the laws haven't been updated recently.

This is an urban myth. the IRS has no documentation format requirements (e.g. hand written, computer generated, typewriter, etc.) when submitting support for a tax position taken on a return. Whether they believe the documentation provided is more dependent on the agent involved, relationship generated during the interview and your organizational presentation. that and the fact that your facts/story makes sense particularly when it relates to an activity like professional vs. recreational gambling.

I remember when Bob Nersessian was on GWAE and he talked about reporting and I believe he stated an excel file is even acceptable so long as it has sufficient information such as Date, Location, Approximate Time, Win/Loss.
